TURTLE HILL RESIDENCE
REVELSTOKE, BRITISH COLUMBIA
COMPLETED 2022
Turtle Hill Residence is a single-family home located on a sloping rural site outside Revelstoke, British Columbia, with the flats extending beyond the rear of the property. The house maintains a clear relationship between building, access, and landscape.
Primary living spaces are located on the main level and arranged to take advantage of the site’s elevation and outlook. Kitchen and dining areas step down to the living room, defining the interior through section. These spaces are grouped as a continuous sequence, extending outward to covered exterior areas that mediate between interior rooms and the surrounding terrain. Private spaces are set back within the plan, maintaining separation. Exposed Douglas fir structure is expressed throughout the interior, extending to ceilings and soffits, reinforcing the relationship between structure, material, and space.
An attached garage is integrated into the overall massing, positioned to support daily use without dominating the composition. The garage is designed to accommodate a car lift, and a secondary suite is located above, introducing additional accommodation while remaining integrated within the overall building form. Circulation throughout the house is direct and legible, with clear transitions between interior rooms and sheltered exterior spaces.
The design is articulated through a series of low-profile roof planes and extended eaves, establishing a strong horizontal presence across the site. Outdoor rooms are formed beneath these roof lines, with covered decks and sheltered areas integrated directly into the plan to extend daily use beyond the interior.
The building is designed to meet Step Code 5, with performance embedded in both structure and assembly. A raft slab foundation eliminates thermal bridging at grade, supporting envelope continuity and interior comfort.
