Double Gable House is a residence in Revelstoke, British Columbia. Drawing from the local residential vernacular, the project references the gable-roofed bungalows constructed throughout the neighbourhood in the 1960s. Traditionally sited, the house maintains the established rhythm of the street while extending the gable form to create sheltered exterior spaces and protected movement between buildings. Originally held as a seasonal retreat, the property became the setting for a new house once permanent residence was established.
The house is composed of two volumes, a domestic structure and a garage, linked by a covered breezeway beneath a unified roof language. This separation clarifies use while allowing the volumes to operate together as a single composition. Within the house, kitchen, dining, and living areas are arranged as one vaulted space. A loft is set above this volume and accessed through the youngest child’s bedroom, introducing a playful sectional relationship between private and shared spaces. A carport at the front of the site reduces the visual presence of the garage door and supports a clear relationship to the street.
The gable roof acts as the project’s primary architectural device, sheltering circulation between volumes and responding directly to snow and seasonal weather.
Material expression is direct and legible. Externally, exposed Douglas-fir structure and cedar tongue-and-groove cladding allow structure and enclosure to read together. Internally, birch and cedar finishes establish a restrained palette suited to long-term occupation.
Energy performance is addressed through a Step Code 5 envelope, a reversed wall assembly with interior plywood sheathing, R40 walls and slabs, an R100 roof, and a ducted heat-pump system supporting stable year-round comfort.
