SAMSON RESIDENCE
REVELSTOKE, BRITISH COLUMBIA
COMPLETED 2025
Samson Residence is a full reconstruction of a historic residence located in Revelstoke, British Columbia. The project replaces an existing heritage home with a new building that reproduces the original form, proportions, and architectural details while meeting contemporary standards of comfort and performance.
Reconstruction emerged from the deteriorated condition of the existing house and a desire to retain its established presence within the streetscape. The new structure closely follows the original architectural drawings, with plan, massing, and proportions largely unchanged. A limited adjustment at the rear introduces access to a new basement level, while a small attached suite is added at the front of the property. Its scale and façade draw from the modest garage extensions typical of houses from this period, allowing it to read as a secondary volume.
Original details are carefully reinterpreted. Mouldings, window proportions, trim profiles, and exterior detailing allow the rebuilt house to read as continuous with its predecessor. Traditional wood siding, finished in colours drawn from the historic palette, reinforces this continuity.
Inside, a formal entry sequence establishes a sense of arrival consistent with the original dwelling. Period-style ceiling details are carried through the main living spaces, while variation is introduced in the bathrooms through colour, remaining grounded in period-appropriate materials.
The rebuilt house is designed to meet Step Code 5, incorporating a high-performance envelope and modern mechanical systems to significantly improve thermal comfort and energy efficiency.
